Rilo Kiley

I like Rilo Kiley well enough, but they are also responsible for some of the dumbest song lyrics I have ever heard. The song Smoke Detector from Under the Blacklight has some particularly outrageous lyrics:

There is a girl in a tank top.
She is not wearing a bra.
She looks so hot on the dance floor.
She does the smoke detector.

The lyrics aren't especially bad so much as just dumb. In this case, I am unable to ascertain the intended meaning of the "smoke detector" metaphor. Perhaps it is not even metaphorical. In fact, for me, these lyrics paint a rather literal image of a drunk, bra-less girl dancing - thrashing? - wildly, as if on fire, in a dive bar while a crowd collectively winces as they witness a tragedy of motion. And I wonder ... was "floor" supposed to rhyme with "detector"? Even as a half rhyme, this is lamentable. Meanwhile, the melody, while catchy, isn't really helping. "I said, 'Day-AY-aynger!!!'. // Do the smoh-OH-ohk detector!!!"

... orly?

Then again, in the following track, The Angels Hung Around, the word "whored" is rhymed with "gored". This little lyrical gem alone might be cause for redemption.
